SMC_MCR returns: 6 September 2011 at Matt and Phreds

Yes, Social Media Cafe Manchester is back with a refreshed focus. Following a period of discussion and reflection, we’ve returned with:

  • A new name: yes, we’re now called SMC_MCR. Regular attendees will know that this has been our hashtag and nickname from the very beginning. As we want to move away from being purely focused on social media, the new name felt like a good way of linking to our past while allowing us to explore a wider range innovative uses of digital technology at our events.
  • A refreshed online presence: (you’re looking at it!), using the simplicity and power of WordPress combined with the useful tools at Lanyrd. This replaces our previous online presence, although that will remain as an archive.
  • A new regular venue: Matt and Phred’s, in the heart of Manchester’s creative scene, the Northern Quarter.

This month we have an unmissable headline debate. Following the riots/lootings that shook Manchester and beyond, we’ll be discussing the role that online communication played before, during and after the events.

Greater Manchester Police got international attention for the way it used Twitter with the GMP24 Police tweets campaign and Amanda Coleman – Corporate Communications Director will be joining us alongside Paul Gallagher – Head of Online for Manchester Evening News and Rebecca Rae – Social Media Architect from PushON Ltd. More panelists to be confirmed. The debate will be chaired by our very own Martin Bryant – European Editor for The Next Web.

Our panel debate will explore issues like:

  • was it right for GMP to ‘name and shame’ offenders from the riots on Twitter?
  • How do the police, media and the rest of us sort credible reports of crime from the  jokes and outright lies?
  • Should social media services be ‘switched off’ during times of crisis, as some politicians have suggested? Is that even possible?

After the debate there will be a chance for some informal socialising and to hear about the next developments for SMC_MCR.

    • Hi Karen, SMC_MCR has always been on Tuesdays but if there was enough demand, we could consider another day.

      • I sat in a pub in Lewisham last night and wtechad a gang of youths marched slowly to Catford, and back again, by huge numbers of police. The only other time I’ve seen such tactics? Football matches…
